How NatHERS is managed and delivered
NatHERS is administered by the Australian Government on behalf of state and territory governments, through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW). DCCEEW, as the NatHERS Administrator, is responsible for the scheme’s governance, oversees software and assessor accreditation, ensures alignment with national energy policy, and works with industry to maintain consistent and reliable ratings.
NatHERS is delivered through a broad network of organisations. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) provides scientific expertise and develops the calculations that support energy assessments. CSIRO and other third-parties provide NatHERS software for use by assessors. Third-party organisations accredit and oversee assessors to ensure they meet professional and technical standards. Independent auditors and training providers also help maintain quality across the scheme.
This collaborative approach gives households, builders, and designers confidence in Home Energy Rating. Each certificate reflects the work of a NatHERS accredited assessor, supported by government, researchers, and industry partners. Together, they help ensure NatHERS continues to support more comfortable, affordable, and resilient homes, now and into the future.
Tracking Performance
Quality assessments backed by CSIRO science
Each Home Energy Rating assessment uses detailed information about climate zones, building materials, design features and appliance performance. Specialised NatHERS accredited software, developed based on Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research, is used to assess how a home is likely to perform in its local climate. This approach ensures ratings are consistent and comparable across Australia.
Home Energy Rating and NatHERS also align with Australia’s broader climate and energy policies. Individual home ratings support Australia’s transition to Net Zero. Read about how they are supporting government policy
