Key messages about Home Energy Rating
- A Home Energy Rating helps households understand the energy performance of their home and where improvements could make the biggest difference. It supports more informed choices about upgrades, helps reduce running costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and can provide valuable information when selling, buying, or renting.
- Backed by government and grounded in science, home energy ratings give Australians the confidence to improve their home to use less energy and be more comfortable.
- Making home energy ratings more accessible across Australia will enable households to make more informed choices about what’s right for them and help drive improvement over time in the energy efficiency of homes in the market.
- Home Energy Rating assessments are undertaken by accredited assessors who visit the home and collect data on-site. They use special software using CSIRO science to generate a certificate outlining current energy use, energy saving tips, and suitable upgrades tailored for the home.
- NatHERS is administered by the Australian Government on behalf of all states and territories. For more than three decades, NatHERS has provided trusted and reliable ratings for new home designs and the expansion to existing home ratings means more households across Australia can access the benefits of this world-leading scheme.
