Data collector training to provide new opportunities
Work is underway to offer existing home assessors the option to outsource on‑site data collection to trained, accredited professionals. This will help to scale-up the workforce to support the growing demand for existing homes assessments.
This new training and accreditation pathway was agreed by all Australian Governments in March 2026. It is anticipated that training will be available for interested individuals from the end of 2026 and accreditation from early 2027.
Using a data collector will be optional, and assessors can continue to collect on-site data themselves if they prefer.
Once available, the training will be open to new entrants and existing professionals, like those working in construction, property, energy auditing and home sustainability services.
If individuals complete the training and accreditation requirements, they can then be accredited as NatHERS data collectors and be able to work with accredited existing homes assessors to deliver home energy ratings to Australian households.

Future of NatHERS highlighted in new plan
The NatHERS Strategic Plan 2026-2030, which sets out major goals and priorities for the next five years, has been published.
Commonwealth, state and territory government representatives have collaborated to produce this key document following consultation with assessors, stakeholders and industry. Priorities include furthering research, refining software and expanding the education, training and skills of assessors into the future.
Another focus – driven by expanded training and education – will be building the national workforce of assessors for new and existing homes across Australia.

NatHERS working group to review airtightness options
If software settings and blower door testing are your thing, sign up for our new airtightness working group. You’ll get the chance to provide feedback on new user selected airtightness options in NatHERS software and also review the software and certificate technical proposals.
The focus on reviewing airtightness in NatHERS follows a recent CSIRO study funded by DCCEEW (CSIRO Air Infiltration of New Dwellings in Australia Report). The report suggests a need for a greater industry and regulatory focus on ventilation integration with airtightness.

REEDI governance forum holds inaugural meeting
The first meeting of the new Residential Energy Efficiency Disclosure Initiative Governance Forum (REEDI GF) took place in early March. The forum oversees implementation of the Home Energy Ratings Disclosure Framework.
Two key items on the agenda included an approach to phasing in home energy ratings and disclosure, and the REEDI GF Strategic Plan 2026-27.
The forum discussed commencing a Market-DrivenPhase to encourage energy efficiency upgrades, supported by consistent descriptions of key energy efficiency features and home energy ratings. These would be embedded across proptech and real estate services to help prepare for any future Regulation-Driven Phases at a later date.
Driving energy efficiency upgrades during a Market-Driven Phase will create early opportunities for real estate, proptech, and building services, while also supporting demand. Research shows that households want visibility of energy efficiency features in property advertising and this information can help them to take action.
The REEDI GF Strategic Plan 2026-27 will reflect the phased introduction of home energy ratings and disclosure. Members have identified a range of actions to support the further roll-out of home energy ratings from mid-2026.
