Protecting information builds trust

Accredited assessors handle sensitive information about homes and households as part of the rating process. Protecting privacy and using data responsibly is essential to safeguard clients and maintain the integrity of the scheme.

Assessors must collect only the personal information needed to complete a Home Energy Rating assessment. This includes the client’s name, address and contact details, as well as evidence of the home’s features. Assessors must avoid capturing sensitive information and must give clients the opportunity to review and delete any unintended material.

Assessors must maintain appropriate business systems to manage personal information collected during an assessment. This includes having policies and procedures in place to handle privacy incidents, in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. Clients must be given clear options to opt out of publication, research, and post-assessment contact.

Assessors must ensure that they, or the business they work through, have privacy policies and procedures that comply with the Australian Privacy Principles and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), as well as any relevant state or territory privacy laws where assessments are conducted.
